Battle Buddies: Carrot Sword
Frey’s chest heaved with breath as she lifted her hand to wipe sweat from her forehead, staring blankly at the place where the monster had vanished to return to the Forest of Beginnings.
A chuckle began in her belly and swarmed her body, and she buckled over, grasping her gut. Dylas wiped his mouth with his gauntleted hand with a confused smirk. “What is it?”
Frey grinned, catching her breath, and pointed.
On the ground where the monsters had been slain, various loot was spilled across the floor. Among them was a large carrot with sharp edges. Dylas’s ears perked up at the sight, then lowered. Frey scooped it up at the hilt and tilted it in the low light of the cave. “Look at that, would ya’?” Frey grinned, and offered it to the horse-Guardian. He grimaced, and took it, curiosity hiding behind a stern face.
“Is… Is this… Is this a sword?”
Dylas glared over at her. “A… carrot…” he shook his head and handed it back to Frey.
She held it up and expected it again, plucking a hair from her head. She pressed the strand against the edge, and whistled with appreciation as the carrot cleanly sliced through. “Sharp,” she murmured, then eyed Dylas up and down.
Dylas saw where she was going with her thoughts and held up his hands, “No, no… I’m not… you can’t be thinking— “
“Oh, but I am,” she grinned and handed it to him, “Your weapon is so measly—how could we not take advantage of this rare opportunity?”
Dylas stared at the carrot that was thrust into his hand and his face returned to a scowl. “This isn’t a joke that will lead to more horse references, is it?” he glowered over at her.
Frey stretched her arms behind her back with a grunt, “Not in the least.”
He stared at her for a moment, running all the possible consequences through his mind, all the possible teasing and jokes flung his way. But…. He did really like carrots. He sighed and slid it into his belt. “Alright, Frey. You win.”
Frey jumped into the air with a fist pump and twirled around on her foot with an excited “Yes!!” and turned to face her party member. “I’ll have Bado make a sheath for it when we get back.”
Dylas’ face went white. “You’re not go—“
“Come on, let’s go!” Frey ignored him, twisting on her heel and marching through to the next room. “Better keep your guard up, here we go!”
Dylas hesitated for a moment, staring down at the carrot. He sighed and let himself crack a rare smile and followed behind her.
